Organic Spinach
(Spinacea olerace)
Certified Organic by CSI
Developed by the Organic Seed Alliance (OSA) in collaboration with organic farmers, this Heirloom seed variety produces thick, dark green, succulent, crinkled leaves that are very sweet, raw or cooked. Excellent for Canadian growers as it is cold hardy & slow bolting. Part of the OSSI (open source seed initiative).
Matures in 50 days.
Packet = 300 seeds
Gardening Guide:
- Starting - Sow seeds 1cm (1/2″) deep, 1" apart/10 seeds per 30cm (12″), in rows 30-45cm (12-18″) apart. Thin to at least 5-8cm (2-3″) between plants after germination, or further if you want larger leaves. Optimal soil temperature: 5-20°C (45-70°F). Seeds should sprout in 7-14 days.
- Timing - Direct sow as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. For a continuous supply plant every 2 weeks until late spring. Spinach will bolt once days get long and hot.
- Exposure - Full sun to partial shade.
- Harvest - For baby greens, pick when the leaves are 7-10cm (3-4″) long. Individual leaves can be picked at anytime, until the plant has started to bolt. Cut the whole spinach plant just above soil level.
